Character InformationName: Jian Wentai Sun, but he goes by "Wesley", the closest English equivalent to "Wentai" that he could find.
Canon Origin/Series: Dynasty Warriors
Teaching Position and why it suits them: Flying. In canon, Sun Jian (and most men who come from his part of China, near the Jiangdong river) are known to be familiar with the naval warfare. And to be proficient in naval warfare, one has to be first of all good with sailing. It may not be stated in his canon but Sun Jian's canon reputation as an expert pirate hunter is, in my opinion, a good indication of how well he can sail and navigate waters. Thus, in this AU I am making him a good flyer on account of his familiarity with wind speed, sharp turns and manoeuvring his broom through tough weather, all things he would be familiar with as an expert sailor.
Suitability: While he has no technical teaching experience, in canon Sun Jian is known as a great leader of men and is feared and respected as a general, a warlord and a pirate hunter. He remains a good role model to his children and to future officers and generals of the kingdom of Wu. He is known to be more of a gentleman than the other leaders and although he's looked down on for being from a more rural part of China, he takes it all in stride and conducts himself well. He is loyal to the Emperor of his country and he also prioritizes the well-being of all that live in the area he governs over his own life.
Wesley Sun is much like his 2nd century counterpart; he is well-respected by his community and children. He takes care to guide the younger generations of his area so that they grow to be good people, and while he is still ridiculed due to his background he refuses to let it colour his actions towards others. He is loyal to his community, country and Crown and is willing to sacrifice his life if it will serve to protect the village he grew up in.
Gender: Male
Age: 38
Out of school living location: Tollesbury. It's a rural coastal town known for its wild and beautiful seas.
Blood status: Pureblood.
Personality: The first impression that people normally get from Sun Jian is in regards to his warmth and kindness to others. Despite his reputation as a fierce and efficient pirate hunter, Sun Jian doesn't let fame or rank get to his head. While he isn't hesitant to indulge in a little boasting every now and then, he comes off as more confident of his abilities than arrogant. He treats the soldiers under his command with respect and dignity. He encourages his men through his willingness to share both the good and the bad times and his dedication to making lives better for his home and the people who live in it, including the soldiers and their families. Similarly Wesley made it as a Royal Marine Officer, but when he returned back to his village he does not regard himself any better than his fellow village friends and co-workers, treating them just as he had before. He leads the coastal guard and the neighbourhood watch just as he did before he entered the Navy, with all it's ranks and prestige. Su
And speaking of family there is nothing that Sun Jian treasures more than his children. When it comes to his kids Sun Jian will not withhold his pride over them and their achievements. He is more likely to boast about how well his kids have done rather than his latest triumphs. He loves each of them dearly, more than his own life, and part of the reason why he fights so hard is because he wants to create a land where they can live in peace and happiness. He enjoys a good relationship with his kids as they know their father as a loving, caring and fair man who always seems to know what to say to his children to cheer them up when they're down. And because he is fair, Sun Jian does not spoil his children. He does discipline them when he feels they are in need of it, but it's always done out of his great love for them, and never because of anger or frustration. This is all also evident in Wesley; he gives up his career in the Navy to return to the village to protect his family. And while in this AU his relationship with his children is not as solid as his canon counterpart he still tries to be a good father to them, raising them to be good children and trying to be there for them despite how tough it was to work long shifts and still attend all those teacher-parent meetings.
Sun Jian may be well-respected among those who know him, but he has also been subject to scorn and ridicule by those above him who deem his countryside background as something of a humiliation. For all the hard work he puts in and the victories that he scores he is considered a country bumpkin unworthy of equal standing by other warlords. But Sun Jian doesn't hold grudges over such petty things. He simply accepts that some people may be prejudiced against him and moves on. If they come to him with an apology, then Sun Jian will give them his forgiveness. He is a man who chooses not to let others upset him because it's not worth his time to get upset about it. He'd rather concentrate on his job, his men and his family then waste time harbouring ill thoughts against someone. For Wesley, he was looked down on for being from a backwater town and because he didn't graduate from a prestigious university. He was mocked for it but he chose to ignore the taunts and concentrated on his studies instead, preferring to win his peers' respect the honest and hard way. He never managed to convince all of them, but it's no skin off his back if they call him nasty names behind his back because it just doesn't matter.
However for all of Sun Jian's gentlemanly ways there comes a time when all bets are off and he shows why he is known as the Tiger. Sun Jian is fierce in his attack, courageous and determined to win when he encounters his foes. In his original canon it would be pirates and bandits, but in this AU it would be pirates, thieves and Death Eaters. As a very family-orientated man, a loyal subject to the crown and a just person, Wesley shows no mercy to law breakers when they attempt to hurt other people. People learn exactly why it is an unwise idea to tangle with the Tiger because his bravery and his leadership skills are a deadly combination when met with his desire to protect. He cannot promise that he will spare those who have caused harm to others; there's no hesitation to kill when he enters a skirmish, but to those who surrender he will consider an arrest. Consider being the key word.
Canon Background: Wiki article about Sun Jian here.
Background (AU!Canon; HP): Wesley was born in a rural village by the sea. He grew up with the ocean as his playground, learning how to swim through even the roughest tides and sail through the stormiest of seas. The village he lived in was populated by both Muggles and wizards but while the wizards kept their identity as magic-users secret, they still interacted with their non-magical neighbours sharing in Christmas dinners, Easter celebrations, New year Eve's fireworks and other such community events. Wesley himself was a friendly, open and warm child; as the years went by he made plenty of friends from both worlds.
When he was 11 went off to Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor. He was a decent student with both his good and bad subjects. He enjoyed Charms and Defence against the Dark Arts, but he might have dozed off in a few Potions classes. He preferred subjects with a little more...action, so his like of History of Magic was a surprising and curious choice, but Wesley had an appreciation for great and good wizards from the past and that kept him tethered to his chair despite his peers dozing off in class. He found an affinity with Flying as well, finding similarities between sailing and flying that allowed him to excel in Quidditch under his position as Keeper. He scored decently enough in his OWLs and his NEWTs but while there were a few wizarding jobs that he might've fancied, his first passion was for the sea and for the community he grew up in. In his time away from his home, the waters around his home had become increasingly dangerous due to rougher seas and the presence of pirates and smugglers. Feeling a call of duty to protect his village he returned and entered the coastal guard, where he quickly established himself as an expert tracker and sailor (his magic contributed to this, and so he was humble in his triumphs). In his first two years, he patrolled the Tollesbury coast so fiercely that he was nicknamed "The Tiger" by his fellow sailors. Due to his courage and natural leader capabilities, he soon became the unofficial leader of the guards. During this time, he also married his childhood Muggle sweetheart and started a home with her. Wesley was satisfied enough with his life that he didn't even feel the need to use his magic much anymore. So long as he had his hands, his sailing and his family and friends, he found he didn't really need the use of a wand. And it was actually fun to learn things the Muggle way.
But when the situation had calmed down in his village, he found himself getting restless and bored. Peace was good, but he found himself in need of more action in his life. He tried to stick to the calm and quiet life, torn between family and his desire to sail rough seas once more, but in the end it was his wife who suggested that he try for the Royal Navy. After assuring her husband that she was fine and able to take care of their children, Wesley immediately jumped at his chance and applied. The interviewers were quite impressed with his record at sea and even offered him a chance at making officer. He found his true calling at the Britannia Royal Navy College as he threw himself into his studies, but his years at the academy were not all smooth sailing; questions about his education background could not be given an honest answer (he could not say that he had gone to a wizarding school for 7 years), and thus he had to endure the condescending tones of some of his superiors and his peers.
Still, Wesley held no malice in him and merely carried on, working hard and proving his worth till he succeeded and was made a Royal Marines Officer. He worked at his postings for a few years thoroughly enjoying the work he was given, but it was a chance meeting at his village that forced him to take a second look into what he was doing. During his shore leave he and a group of friends were walking back from the pub when they were set upon by a group of Death Eaters looking for sport. Wesley lost two of his friends but saved the other three by surprising the Death Eaters with his magic. The Ministry was called in and Memory Charms were cast on the Muggle survivors, but Wesley still had to attend two funerals and listen to his friend's wives cry and look at the sad and confused eyes of their children. As a father of three by then he understood the grief the victims' families had to go through. While he may have immersed himself deeply into the Muggle world, he still kept up to date with the going-ons in the wizarding community. He recognized that a dark time was coming upon them, and that the villagers might be needing his protection once again. So he submitted his resignation letter to the Navy and returned back to his home to serve them. He re-enlisted into the patrol guard, offered himself to join the neighbourhood watch, and for six years he guarded his village from any more attacks. This was not without strain on his family; his wife did her best to understand why he threw himself into the line of fire but his children found it a difficult burden to bear. It especially lead to a deepening chasm between him and his oldest son who couldn't understand why his father was so involved with others but couldn't spare time to throw a ball or go fishing with his own son. By the time the boy received his own letter to attend Hogwarts he was not speaking to his father at all. His wife said it was "just a phase" but Wesley found it painful to see his boy get on the train without so much as a look back.
Thus when Voldemort was finally defeated and Wesley was again at liberty to chart his own course, he decided that he owed it to his children to mend the gap between their relationship. With his second eldest son entering Hogwarts at that time, Wesley submitted a letter requesting a job to Dumbledore. His skills with his wand were not at their best, but he never lost his knack for flying and thus requested the position of Flying Teacher.
